The goal of the Board of Directors and staff of Adult Care of Chester County, Inc. is to provide the most appropriate therapeutic activities for each participant that attends the adult day center. There are four separate programs in the Exton Center. Each program offers the same elements of therapeutic activities but the way those activities are implemented varies with the abilities of the participants in each group. In addition, the level of assistance needed with personal care varies from one program to another. An example of how activities are modified to meet the abilities of the group would be to look at how the cognitive game Alphabet Soup is played:

• With participants who are alert and oriented, a letter is selected and a subject is selected: For example, the letter “B” was pulled from the soup pot and the subject selected might be cities in the United States. Participants take turns guessing a city that starts with B. A list is made of the responses. Sometimes teams will be formed to compete for points.
• For participants who have decreased ability for easy recall of words, the letter is pulled from the pot but the category is much broader, such as the name of any town, city, state, country or area that starts with that letter. Again, the answers are marked on a board but since competition would be frustrating to this group, the list is merely a reminder of what has been identified. Hints may be used to help participants succeed in naming the place or item.
• For those with great difficulty with recall or word finding, the letter is pulled from the pot with a very broad category and very helpful hints are given to facilitate the participants’ success in this group activity. Participants are most comfortable spending the day with others who have abilities and challenges most like their own. In addition to the comfort factor, the success in activities depends on those in the group having like abilities and similar interests. Some of the special interest groups are comprised of just men, like the Men’s Music Appreciation Group and others are based on shared interests like ceramics.

Exton (Sharp Lane Center)

Kilpatrick Memorial Program is a program that offers a balance of physical activities to provide exercise and mentally challenging activities to give participants the ability to use their minds and keep as sharp as possible. This group is comprised mostly of men and serves many of our Veterans so topics of conversation tend to be more about sports and other subjects most typically of interest to men.

Social Circle - is a program similar to that of the Kilpatrick Program in that it offers both physical activities to provide exercise and mentally challenging activities to encourage participants to use their minds in order to retain their mental abilities. This group has been comprised of all women for most of its ten-year history. The subject matter tends to focus on women’s issues and interests.

Club is a program that utilizes physical and mental activities but with more emphasis on the physical activities to enable participants to succeed in the games in which they are engaged. This group is comprised of both men and women with subject matter being more balanced between the interests of men and women.

Friendship Circle is a program that utilizes physical and mental activities in a manner that meets the very individual needs of each member of this group. Activities are modified to permit short one-on-one interactions and rest periods for those in need of quiet/rest time.

Kennett Square (Southern Chester County Center) Serving people in the southern areas of Chester County and western Delaware County, this program provides the same care and services offered at the Exton site. However, this program is integrated, and participants have different levels of cognitive and physical ability. Both large and small group activities are planned. This center provides bilingual staff for our Spanish speaking participants.
